The typical image of a depressed, lazy and tired person is someone hunched over and inert. Often, the assumption is that if one had more enthusiasm and inspiration, he would then stand up straight and move. In many cases, this equation is backward. But, as with everything related to one__ physicality, balance is the key. An overly erect and rigid posture may convey confidence and power to some, but it also causes a subtle accumulation of tension and rigidity on various levels, including psychological and emotional.

Getting down to the gym a couple days a week and having low-fat milk in your morning latte isn__ going to make much of a dent in a system or lifestyle that is essentially, well, unwell.

In my experience, most people are actually seeking recovery from the monotony and anxiety of qualitative repetition. This applies to body, emotions and mind. And that monotony and anxiety involves inertia just as much as over-use, meaning inertia in some areas and over-use in others.

The person who wishes to attain human perfection should study logic first, next mathematics, then physics, and, lastly, metaphysics.

If the empirical details didn__ bear this out, if you thoroughly studied the refrigerator and found neither a connection to a distant power source nor a battery, you might still argue that the fridge had some super-insulation capabilities and that the food inside had been able to stay cold since it was dragged out here. But say this explanation didn__ pan out either, and you observed the fridge staying the same temperature week after week while you opened and closed it. Then you__ start to wonder if it was powered by some technology beyond your comprehension. But pretty soon you__ notice something else about this refrigerator. The fact that it never runs out of food. Then you__ start to wonder if somehow it didn__ get restocked while you slept. But you__ realize that it replenished itself all the time, not just while you were sleeping. All this time, you__ keep eating from it. It would keep you alive out here in the middle of nowhere. And because of its mystery you__ begin to hate and fear it, and yet still it would feed you. Even though you couldn__ explain it, you__ still need it. And you__ assume that you simply didn__ understand the technology, rather than ascribe to it some kind of metaphysical power. You wouldn__ place your faith in the hands of some unknowable god. You__ place it in the technology itself. Finally, in frustration, you__ come to realize you__ exhausted your rationality and the only sensible thing to do would be to praise the mystery. You__ worship its bottles of Corona and jars of pickled beets. You__ make up prayers to the meats drawer and sing about its light bulb. And you__ start to accept the mystery as the one undeniable thing about it. There__ enough metaphysics in not thinking about anything.

Everything 'happens'. People_can 'do' nothing. From the time we are_born to the time we die things happen, happen, happen, and we think we_are doing. This is our normal state in life, and even the smallest possibility_to do something comes only through the work, and first only in oneself,_not externally.

Many things are mechanical and should remain mechanical. But mechanical thoughts, mechanical feelings__hat is what has to be studied and can and should be changed. Mechanical thinking is not worth a penny. You can think about many things mechanically, but you will get nothing from it.

Q. Surely it is easier to be objective about other people than about_oneself?A. No, it is more difficult. If you become objective to yourself you can_see other people objectively, but not before, because before that it will_all be coloured by your own views, attitudes, tastes, by what you like_and what you dislike. To be objective you must be free from it all. You_can become objective to yourself in the state of self-consciousness: this_is the first experience of coming into contact with the real object.
